Back to School Night, Field Trip, and more....

Just a reminder that Back to School Night is Tuesday, September 19th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.  This is an adults only event.  I'm looking forward to seeing/meeting you all!

On October 6th, we will be taking a field trip to Farmer Dave's.  Information about our field trip went home this week.  Please return the permission slip and money as soon as you can (if you haven't already).  We've had many parents kindly volunteer to chaperone!  We are only allowed 3-4 chaperones per classroom, so I will be putting parents names in a hat and selecting chaperones by Sept. 27th. Chaperones must have a CORI on file with central office.

Thank you for all the great pictures you have send in for our writing project! We will begin working on our project next week.

Wednesday: CRAZY HAT DAY
Thursday: NEON DAY

Wednesday, June 14, 2017

field day tomorrow!

Field day is tomorrow!  Since we will be spending lots of time outside in the sun, I wanted to share a message from the nurse about sunscreen: The FDA considers sunscreen an over-the-counter medication, therefore, without medical documentation, (Medical diagnosis, and doctor's order etc.), school staff is not allowed to apply it during school hours. Please apply sunscreen to your child before coming to school, or, you may come during the day and apply it.

We had so much fun at the tide pool! Thank you Mr. Musselman, Ms. Pavlikec, and all our chaperones for making it a great day!

Field Day Date Change

Due to all the rain this week, Field Day has been moved to June 15.  The field is currently too wet to use.  Think sunny thoughts!

Animal Projects

The animal projects came out great! The models students created at home were so impressive! Kids are now presenting their models and reading their informative texts to the class.  Have your child read you their book when they bring it home.

No homework this week so that families have time to work on the animal model.

Research Projects

Hope everyone had an enjoyable vacation.  We are back at school and ready to work hard! We have completed our class book on chickens.  Each child will be getting their own copy to keep.  Look for those at the end of the week!

Yesterday, kids started their animal research.  They are in the middle of finding interesting facts about the animal they chose.  This information will be turned into a written report that will be presented to their classmates.  As part of the project, your child will be creating an accurate model of that animal (3D replica, poster, diorama, etc.) at home.  This project should reflect your child's vision of their chosen animal with your support.  This is meant to be a fun learning activity that you can do at home together.  This project will be due on Wednesday, May 10th.  There will be no homework next week so your time can be focused on this animal project.  Looking forward to seeing the animal models!

Upcoming Learning

Reading Comprehension Strategy: We spent last month learning about making inferences while we read.  This month, we are focusing on identifying the main idea and details.

Fundations: We have learned a number of new glued sounds- ank, ink, onk, unk, ang, ing, ong, ung. We are practicing how to accurately read and write these types of words.  We will also be adding suffixes to these words.

Math: We have completed our unit of Extending the Counting Sequence to 120.  We practiced writing numbers up to 120.  We practiced starting at any number and counting up to 120.  We practiced counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's.  Practice this at home with your child!  Has your child mastered this already? Challenge them by starting at any number and count on by 10. For example: 23, 33, 43, 53, 63, 73, 83, 93, 103, 113. Our current unit is Understanding Place Value.

Science:  We just started or unit on Patterns in the Sky.  We will observe and describe patterns of motion between the sun, moon, and stars in relation to the Earth. We also just started our Chick Hatching unit.  Incubators and eggs will be arriving at the very end of the month.  The kids are very excited to be getting chicks as a class pet!

School Wide Contest:  The class that collects the most Box Tops wins a pajama pizza party!  Send in box tops in baggies of 20.  Contest ends May 5th.

We are so proud to have finally finished our Personal Narratives! We chose a title, illustrated a cover, and wrote an About the Author page.  Then, we shared our writing with a group of peers.  This piece of writing will be sent home at the end of the year.
