Caroling in the Hallways

Your first grade child will be caroling in the hallways during music class on Thursday, December 17th at 1:30 pm.  Parents are welcome to join us and sing along.  If you would like to dismiss your child after the assembly, please send a note to the office.

Homes for Animals

The science center is looking for homes for box turtles and a snapping turtle over Winter Vacation. 

The science center will provide cage, food, bedding, and care sheet for each animal.  Call Ms. Wendy Pavlicek at 781-270-2928 if interested.  Animals are distributed on a first come, first serve basis. All animals must be picked up by making an appointment with Ms. Pavlicek.

Personal Narratives

For the past month, our class has been learning about Personal Narratives.  We have read many, and even wrote some of our own.  The first personal narrative we wrote was about the school reward we earned in October.  For the second Personal Narrative, kids chose to write about their own experience.  Here are the features of a great Personal Narative.

- It has a title

- It has a beginning, middle, and end

- Events are in order

- It has a narrator

- The word "I" is used a lot

- It has good, detailed sentences

Just a reminder that Scholastic Book orders are due today.  Please send me a note if the books you purchased are gifts for your child that you want to keep a surprise.

Last call for Scolastic book orders.  I will be placing the order tomorrow afternoon. Thank you for helping our class earn free books for our classroom library!!  I will be sending a new flyer home in December. 

1st Grade Homework Starts Today

Can you believe it is October 5th already?! That means homework starts today.  I sent an extra Homework BINGO sheet home with each child in case you cannot locate your copy given at Back to School Night.  Math pages 1-1 and 1-2 can be found in the Commom Core are teaching and Practice workbook that went home at Back to School Night.  Please tear them out and return them with the BINGO sheet on Friday. 

I have also sent home information on how to use ST Math at home.  I sent home a school ID and password just in case you need it. However, I'm hoping you shouldn't need to use it.

Picture Day Reminder

Math Fluency Assessments

On Friday, your child took a timed math fluency assessment. Students have 2 minutes to complete 20 problems. The corrected math test went home in folders today.  Don't worry about the score of the first test.  Many students are just getting used to taking a timed test.  These assessments will be sent home weekly so that you can see your child's progress. 

Picture Day

Picture Day is Friday, October 2nd.  Picture order forms are going home with your child today.  Please return them on or before October 2nd.  Have a great weekend!

Scholastic Book Orders

Dear Families,

Encouraging reading is one of the most important things we can do to help your child succeed. I am excited that our class will be participating in Scholastic Reading Club this school year.  Today, some book order forms went home with your child. To order online, go to scholastic.com/readingclub and use our class code: LPQPM. Every book you buy earns points towards FREE books for our class library.  As a (newer) first grade teacher, I'd love to add as many books as possible to our library!

Completed Passports

On Friday, we completed our school passports and traveled to the last 3 areas of the school: The playground, stage, and the bus line-up area. We all received a star meaning that we showed great behavior in all these areas.  Great work 109!

School Rules

Today the kids traveled around the school with passports.  We visited 4 different areas and practiced appropriate behavior for each.  After kids demonstrated appropriate behavior, they received a star in their passport. We have 3 more areas to visit next week.

It’s hard to believe that our first week of school is over!  I am having a wonderful time getting to know your children. The class has been working very hard. We are meeting new friends and learning the classroom rules and routines.  Ask your child what some of our classroom rules are!

Each child was given a classroom job.  These jobs may include line leader, pencil sharpener, door holder, etc.  The jobs will change every Monday, and students will keep his or her job for the entire week.  Every child will have an opportunity to do every job.
